Pluit Dam Park in Penjaringan Urban Village, Penjaringan Sub-District, North Jakarta, which previously slum, is now beautiful. The five-hectare wide area now becomes a free recreational site for Jakartans, where water surrounds the area built for people to hang out and gather. Its design looks like the Ayodya Park in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
In Pluit Dam Park, benches, similar to the ones installed along Sudirman-Thamrin, are put near bamboo trees planted by PT Jakarta Propertindo. This makes the west side of Pluit Dam which once looked arid now lush.
Besides bamboo trees, there are also 12 trees of coastal typical plants planted there, such as sea grape (Coccoloba uvifera), kalpataru (Barringtonia asiatica), tamarind (Samanea saman), small-leaves ficus (Ficus lyrata), and teak (Tectona grandis). Especially for teak trees, which grow for more than three years with height not less than five meters, they were planted in a row on both sides of inspection road as wide as 3.5 meters.
Inevitably, many people choose to spend their days and weekends in this park, especially because anyone can enter the park free of charge. They also admitted proud and amazed for this area’s transformation from previously slum to become a beautiful park.
“I often came here just to relieve fatigue. Here, on weekend, concert is often held. It’s better to come here than going to Ancol because we have to pay there. Pluit Dam is now different after being normalized, well-arranged, and not slum like it used to be,” stated Dian (23), resident of RT 05/05, Sempertimur Urban Village, North Jakarta, Monday (2/24).
“There was no park here but dirty scene. Now, I always bring my kids to play in here every afternoon,” said Mila (35), resident of RT 19/17 Penjaringan Urban Village.
“I haven’t come here since a long time ago. Now, this place is this good,” expressed Daniel (35), Jakartan who lives in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta.
”I came here to sport because the view is good. And sometimes, I go fishing in my day off,” told Edi Kusnadi, Penjaringan resident.
According to PT Jakarta Propertindo Director, Budi Karya Sumadi, Pluit Dam Park is intended intentionally for residents. Therefore, the residents are asked to take care of the park and maintain cleanliness.
“Since this park is for the residents, everyone must participate in taking care of it,” he stressed.
Moreover, Sumadi explained that Pluit Dam Park was built to function as city’s lungs as well as to balance the ecosystem. Part of the area is used as children’s playground and education center for environment and beauty. The idea of this whole came from Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo and Vice Governor Basuki T Purnama.
He also disclosed that six hectares of land on the west side of Pluit Dam Park will be transformed into green open space, jogging track, children’s playground, amphitheater, and dock. In addition, three other hectares will be functioned as waste water installation and a hectare for clean water treatment (reverse osmosis).
At this time, the dam as wide as 80 hectares is under process of function normalization. Several controlling efforts have been conducted in these last few months, so Pluit Dam area is now more open and under progress of park construction.
