As many as 165 local palaces or locally called as keraton and 11 foreign kingdoms are going to enliven the Keraton Art Festival (a regular event that presents royal art performances) in Monas, Central Jakarta, on December 5-8, 2013. By so, it is expected able to attract more tourists, either local or foreign country to the capital city.
“We want to promote Jakarta and to hold different event. Thus, it can attract more foreign tourists to visit Jakarta,” said Jakarta Govenor, Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo, at City Hall, Tuesday (12/3).
Jokowi stated, there will also be 165 local participants, such as kingdom, kasunanan, kasultanan, penglisir, saoraja, pura, and indigenous stakeholders. Even, 11 countries will also enliven the festival, consisting of Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Norway, Sweden, Japan, Brunei Darussalam, United State, Portugal, South Africa, and Denmark, where they ready to send a representative.
He continued, the festival is held for the first time and has never existed in the world. Thus, it is expected to become a routine activity in Jakarta. “We will see, whether the city brand will be lifted or not. I believe it will be a regular agenda, but may not be annual. I just want to hold it once every two years with differen theme,” he explained.
He expressed that a variety of the events have been preapred. They are seminars, exhibitions palace, cultural performances, carnival culture, culinary festival, and gala dinner. For the opening, it will be centered at Borobudur Hotel which falls on December 5, at 8 AM. In a seminar held to formulate a declaration as recommendations to government regarding world peace efforts through cultural approach.
As for the exhibition, will be held on December 6-7 on the west, south, and east sides of Monas Plaza. Especially for exhibition of royal objects and heritage will be on display in Monas’s diorama room. The interesting thing is the workshop making a dagger that has been recognized as a UNESCO world cultural heritage of Indonesia. Then there will also be a series of ritual that has become a tradition and some demonstrations, like how to make gamelan, batik, and traditional herbal medicine or locally called as jamu.
Head of Jakarta Tourist and Culture Department, Arie Budhiman said the culture carnival would be staged around Monas with some routes, starting from Northeast side of Monas – Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara – Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat – Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan and returned to Monas through the southeast door.
“Such carnival will be participated by 30 golden chariots and traditional horse carts. Eventually, 500 participants will do a parade consisting of royal troops and art and cultural attractions of the archipelago. As for the participants of king and queen would wearing their distinctive robes and join the carnival ,” he informed.
He added, budget for Keraton Art Festival is reaching Rp 20 billion. During the festival, Monas park is hoped conducive in order to maintain the security and comfort. As planned, the park will be transformed into a kingdom plus its ornaments and contemporary buildings that reflect the functions of a palace chamber.
