ISTIQLAL MOSQUE + KATEDRAL CHURCH [photo stop]
The Istiqlal Mosque or Masjid Istiqlal is the largest in South East Asia with 66.66 meters tall; the number is to symbolize 6,666 verses, the traditional perception on the numbers of verses in Al Quran. Adjacent to the mosque, there is a Roman Catholic Church named Jakarta Katedral or Gereja Katedral Jakarta. The present church is the one rebuilt around 1891 to 1901 after its previous church was collapsed.
INDEPENDENCE PALACE [photo stop]
The Independence Palace previously served as a residence for the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies during the colonial era. In 1949, the palace was renamed Merdeka Palace, "merdeka” is an Indonesian word stands for "freedom" or "independence". Now, it is used as the official residence of the President of Republic of Indonesia.
SARINAH SHOPPING MALL
Sarinah Department Store is the first shopping mall in Jakarta, was established on August 17, 1962 on the idea of Ir. Soekarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia. This Department store offers one stop shopping place for souvenirs such as handicrafts, puppets, batiks, carvings, weaving, silver, jewelry, basketry, leather goods and a range of interior design items from all over the archipelago.
NATIONAL MONUMENT (MONAS)
This 132-meter-high column towering over Merdeka Square is Jakarta’s principal landmark. Topped by a glittering flame symbolizes the nation’s independence. The flame made of 14.5 ton of bronze is gilded with 50 kg of gold leaf. (Monday closed). For further information, please click here
